Exhibition
Waulsort, Pearls of the MeuseThe Waulsortium proposes an exhibition consisting of four spaces:
Waulsort and its abbey The use of water has evolved through history. The conquest of the water by mankind was a long one. Since forever man wants to control this blue gold. The presence of water was a crucial element in the choice of location of a new abbey, a proven by the abbey of Waulsort. From the Middle Ages till the dawn of the industrial age water has a multitude of essential applications. These shows the versatility and the different ways of consumption (water is vital for nourishment, beverages and hygiene). Water is a fundamental sort of wealth and a symbol playing a role in the emergence and structural planning of cities and villages. The exhibition space highlights the importance of water during the Middle Ages and the modern times in the abbey and the village, and its social and economic role. Waulsort during the belle époque Foremost characterised by the artists attracted by its charm, Waulsort during the belle époque is also the story of the hotels that left no visitor untouched. In this exhibition space the visitor discovers the evolution of tourism in the valley. Focus point is the touristic past of Waulsort that led to the development explosion of the village in the belle époque. This is illustrated through the history of the different hotels that created the fame of “the Pearl of the Meuse” and its tourism. Waulsort and the Meuse painters Works by 19th century painters, showing their bygone view of the Meuse between Dinant and Givet, are presented together with 21st century creations of artists from the Meuse valley, with their personal vision of the river. This confrontation permits to see the evolution that art and the mind of artists have made through the centuries. At the same time we retrieve familiar and forgotten atmospheres and landscapes. Waulsort and the Meuse This exhibition space presents the landscape of Waulsort, that remained unchanged from the Middle Ages till 1830. The physiognomy of the valley changed drastically afterwards through the construction of the railway and thoroughfares, the channelling of the Meuse and the building of locks, all determining the present sight. |
