Freÿr, a charming place out of time.
Situated in a green oasis, the Domain of Freÿr is stretched out on the banks of the Meuse between Dinant and Waulsort. The renaissance castle, the former summer residence of the Dukes of Beaufort-Spontin, welcomes you into its classical premises, which were furnished and decorated by the 20 generations who lived here. They invite you to meet History (royal guests, Coffee Treaty) in its wonderful surroundings. The walled formal gardens in the style of Le Nôtre present you their splendour and intimacy. The babbling of the fountains, the perfume of the 300 years old orange trees and 6 km of hedged maze will seduce both young and old.

Freÿr and its gardens
Reservoirs controlling the waterflow to the pondsThe conduit leading from the La Rochette spring has several off-shoots. Four supply the settling chambers that take the water to the ponds through leaden pipes. Four more lead the overflow to the Meuse.
The first settling chamber feeds the two ponds in front of the orangeries, the second the central pond, the third the four ponds just behind the castle and the last the pond in the forecourt. This fourth settling chamber is constructed in open air, to water the former vegetable garden. The other three are cramped spaces where one cannot stand up. An uncomfortable situation when dredging. The pipes are fitted with a large spray nozzle to prevent frogs from obstructing the fountain heads. The pond water flows into the Meuse through the nearest diversion channel. |
